African – Francolins & Ostriches to Bustards
This group of Africa birds include many ground feeders medium in size to the ostrich.
Africa has a rich variety of francolins, spurfowls and other game birds. Their niches and traits are much like the game birds we know in North America. The unique common ostrich is native to this area. It is the largest bird by weight in the continent. It does not fly. The bustards and korhaans also feed on seeds, insects and small rodents. They do fly, but reluctantly. Both groups of birds are fast walkers. The jacanas and crakes forage for food also, but always in water environments edged with vegetation. They feed on insects, crustaceans, mulluscs and waterlilly bulbs.
