 The Coyote Den – Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, May 2018

Coyote pups - use mouths to engage in play. Terry discovers lone coyote pup at den site. Coyote pups discover photographer Coyote Mama - returning to den site. Coyote trio, distracted from play. Coyote pups, make contact. Coyote pups engage. Mother coyote returns to den, spots photographer in vehicle. Mother coyote looks behind her, up river. Then at pups and vehicle/photographer. Coyote mother decides to leave den and her cubs to photographer. When mom's away the pups will play. and play... and play... constant motion... and play... tumble, wrestle... and play... non-stop. Coyote pup with wolf-like masked face. Mud play. Mud chase and play. Mud-fight play getting rough. Play gets rough with nipping. Mother coyote returns. Play includes constant gnawing, very lightly. Gentle mouthing, shows dominance. A rare moment of rest. Pup stops to watch photographer, hears camera clicking. Coyote pups rise up from den entrance. Coyote trio starts day playing. Mother coyote returns to nurse pups, spots tourist getting out of car. End of shoot. Everyone wants in on the fun. Coyote pup discovers "sky" above Coyote pup emerged from den discovered  "sky" above
